    Feb 5, 2010 Dear Reader,

It is said of the great Indian epic Mahabharata, ‘Whatever happens in Life, finds a mention/echo in it. If the Mahabharata does not refer to something, it  can never be’. Draupadi a proud and learned princess, is unfairly  pledged by her husband in a game of dice. When she is dragged into the Royal court, she asks the Elders there the following:
1>What right did an husband have to pledge his wife? 2>Also did he pledge her while still a free man or after pledging himself first and losing his own independence. In the latter  case, how could a slave pledge a free woman’s independence.
Draupadi’s plight could be due to her partner’s indiscretion or weakness for the royal game of dice. But Srikrishna saves Draupadi’s honour and the Elders finally step in to restore sanity.
The people of Andhra Pradesh are justified in being as agitated as
Draupadi once was. Hope the Srikrishna Committee provides succour.

Whether Hastinapur or Hyderabad, Srikrishna gets Commissioned

The Central Government has set up a Commission to resolve the Telengana issue. Retired Justice Srikrishna is easily one of the most respected persons in the public eye. The issue has  become so complex (thanks to some snap decisions intended to break a fast) that even the Gods would dread to intervene.  But then, as in the Mahabharata, there is always a Srikrishna to depend on….

    Dear Reader (1st Feb, 2010)

    Dear Reader,

We are seeing a lot of ‘firsts’ with the Congress and this Congress regime. A few are captured below….

    > A foreigner takes over the reins of the Congress Party, the party we once used to be proud of, for having thrown off the foreign yoke.

    > Sonia Gandhi’s face appears in all government advertisements. One used to see photographs of politicians occupying official positions in government releases. But the photograph of the person heading the party which is the major constituent of the coalition forming the government is a ‘first’.

    > Another first is a non-Indian government representative (Sonia Gandhi) going to the Beijing Olympics as India’s representative. Her son and daughter joined her. Not sure whether any other family pet also accompanied. Mr. Suresh Kalmadi anyway was already in Beijing to receive them. While his country men hope he has better goals in mind, Kalmadi scores these brownie points by lobbying for Sonia vis a vis our PM or President.

    > But the latest first would be the funniest, if it were not alarming. The Congress has decided to try second. It has decided to appoint a rebel party-man as second CM in Meghalaya. This definitely clouds Constitutional propriety. Mamma mia !

The BJP/RSS’ stand that all Indians need to be given equal opportunities in Maharashta has queered the pitch for its poll-partner, the Shiv Sena. The Shiv Sena continues hammer and tongs with its harangue on mother tongue.

    Dear Reader (29 Jan, 2010)

    Dear Reader,

Possibly the time has come for India to make its own Mission/Vision statement that is SMART, as management professionals say. Specific, Measurable, Ambitious, Realistic and Time-bound. I would also like to add ‘pro-India’, in addition to the above five adjectives.

The immediate trigger for this thought is China making its military ambitions increasingly clear. The global goon, has successfully kept its military apparatus well-oiled under the more sophisticated ‘Mission statement’ – ‘The Business of America is Business’ as its past President Calvin Coolidge had said. India needs to take a leaf from Joseph Heller’s Catch-22. Captured here is the protagonist, Yossarian’s discussion with his Commanding Officer.

Yossarian: “From now on, I am going to think only of myself.”

Supervisor: “But Yossarian, just imagine what would happen if everyone in the world thinks likewise”

Yossarian: “Then I will be a damned fool not to think so”.

    Dear Reader (26th January, 2010)

    Dear Reader,

The news was definitely interesting. Pakistan building tunnels near the border with India ! Indian intelligence officers claim it could be used to prepare for a strike against India (including storage of Nuclear equipment).

Assuming this is true, many right-thinking people on both sides of the border must wonder why the Pakistani government isn’t addressing the bigger threat – the Taliban/ insurgency along its western border(shared with Afghanistan). But then, sometimes it is useful to let a wound fester, it creates sympathy and brings in dollar aid.

Building up hysteria over a non-threat too has its advantages. It legitimises many things… For instance, diverting scare resources critical for social development to feather the nests of the high and mighty.

    No Hindi-rence to manufacturers

The Gujarat High Court refused to direct manufacturers to print details in Hindi on packaged commodities.

While Hindi was an official language, it could not be termed as the national Language, the Court noted.
